With mirror lock-up the mirror (2) flips up towards (5) well before the shutter (3) opens. As a result light no longer reaches the eyepiece (8).

Mirror lock-up (often abbreviated to MLU) is a feature employed in many Single Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras. It allows the operator to reduce vibration-induced motion blur during exposure. It also allows the mounting of lenses which extend into the SLR’s mirror box when mounted.

Reducing vibration

Normal operation in an SLR camera involves flipping the mirror up out of the light-path just before the shutter opens, and then returning it when the shutter closes (although very early SLR’s required the shutter to be cocked for the mirror to return). This causes vibration of the camera, particularly when the mirror slaps into the top of the mirror box. This vibration quickly dies away so the most motion blur is actually seen with short shutter times that capture multiple ’swings’ of the vibration. While longer exposures will capture all of the vibrations, the exposure will be dominated by light captured when the camera is vibration-free (assuming a steady mount).

Mirror lock-up involves flipping the mirror up well before the shutter opens, allowing the vibrations to die down before exposing the film. On some cameras MLU may be operated by an extra push of the shutter button, the second push resulting in the actual opening of the shutter. Other arrangements may involve an extra lever or button that flips the mirror up before using the shutter release button normally. On some cameras MLU is not a separate feature, but operated as part of the self timer.

Note that when the mirror is in the up and locked position, the subject is no longer visible through the viewfinder. Therefore, the photographer must compose the photograph prior to activating mirror lock-up and keep the camera from moving. Use of a tripod helps prevent movement of the camera during this operation.

Combined with a remote or cable release, this greatly reduces the potential for vibration of the camera.

Lenses requiring mirror lock-up

Some lenses are designed such that they extend into the mirror box when properly mounted on an SLR. These may include early wide-angle lenses for SLR’s, certain lenses designed for rangefinder cameras, and certain other non-SLR lenses adapted for SLR use. Mirror lock-up must be activated prior to mounting such lenses, and kept in place in order to prevent damage to the lens and/or camera. This method of operation prevents any use of the SLR viewfinder with the lens. Prior to the development of lenses utilizing the Angieux retrofocus concept, mirror lock-up was essential to wide-angle SLR photography.

(Redirected from Jack boots)

A jackboot is a type of combat boot that rises to at least mid-calf, has no laces, and typically has a leather sole with hobnails and heel irons.[1][2] The term probably originates from association with the word jack or jerkin, as a common garment worn by the peasantry.[3]

German jackboots from 1914.

Although dating since before the Napoleon Bonaparte era and (similarly) still being worn by many modern-day American police officers on motorcycles (motor officers), the twentieth-century jackboots have been strongly associated with totalitarian motifs. The word is commonly used in Britain as a synonym for totalitarianism, particularly fascism, although jackboots and similar types of footwear have been worn by various British regiments since the 18th century. Following the 1982 invasion of the Falkland Islands, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher declared that the democratic rights of the Falkland Islanders had been assaulted, and would not surrender the islands to the Argentine “jackboot.”

A modern American motor officer in footwear similar to jackboots.

The term is perhaps less used in America, although in 1995, National Rifle Association (NRA) president Wayne LaPierre sparked controversy when he referred to overzealous federal agents as “jackbooted government thugs”; the comment caused former U.S. President George H.W. Bush to resign his lifetime membership in the organization. The resignation of so public a figure as Mr. Bush prompted an open letter from the association to the former president to be published in major newspapers; the letter included a litany of alleged and settled cases of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms abuses and an assertion that LaPierre and the NRA were merely borrowing a well-worn phrase uttered by other public figures in their calls for reform of the agency, among them Representative John Dingell of Michigan.[1]

The boots are connected to fascism, particularly Nazism, as they were issued by the Wehrmacht and SS during early phases of World War II before Germany encountered leather shortages. When goosestepping on pavement, the large columns of German soldiers marching in formation created a distinct rock-crushing sound which came to symbolize German conquest and occupation.[citation needed] The same style of boot had been in use with German armies in World War I and before.

Leather jackboots for work

Jackboots can also be associated with the armies of the former USSR (called sapogi) and East Germany. Jackboots are still a part of the modern parade and service attire of the army of Russia, and several other former Soviet states.

The “Jackboot of Oppression” is sometimes referred to as the policy of zealous computer network administrators who lock down their systems tightly.

Music

The Beatles’ “Polythene Pam” lyrics mention “jackboot and kilt”; while “Happiness is a Warm Gun” mentions “hobnail boots”.

The intro of the Sex Pistols song Holidays in the Sun features the sound of marching jackboots.

The Mot?rhead protest song, “March or Die” features the lines “Sword and shield and jackboot heel” in reference to its use by fascist military.

The Smashing Pumpkins have a song entitled “Jackboot” that is included in “Pastichio Medley” from the Zero single. It can also be heard at the end of “Silverfuck” during Siamese Dream era concerts.

The Barenaked Ladies song “Another Postcard” includes the line “some chimps in jackboots.”

The Minutemen song “If Reagan Played Disco,” which mocked the far-right politics and faux-populism of Ronald Reagan, included the lyric “he’d shoot a ton of shit/ you can’t disco with Jackboots.”

The song “Red Dress” on Dear Science, TV on the Radio’s 2008 album, uses the term pejoratively.

Other

Jackboots and Effingham-style boots were, at one time, frequently used in science fiction movies as part of the generic futuristic footwear or “space boots.” This was mostly because they were readily available from costume suppliers and it is considerably cheaper to redress existing costumes which are usually rented by studios. This “space-boot” look has mostly disappeared after Star Trek: The Next Generation introduced a new sensibility into futuristic fashion.[citation needed]

Fishing with gaff hook

In fishing, a gaff is a pole with a sharp hook on the end that is used to stab a large fish and then lift the fish into the boat. Ideally, the hook is placed under the backbone. Gaffs are used when the weight of the fish exceeds the breaking point of the fishing line or the fishing pole, but cannot of course be used if it is intended to release the fish unharmed after capture. However, fish gaffed in the lip, jaw, or lower gill can be released, given that the gaff hook was thin and it was done in exactly the right point.

A “flying gaff” is a specialized type of gaff used for securing and controlling very large fish. The hook part of the gaff (the head) detaches when sufficient force is used, somewhat like a harpoon’s dart. The head is secured to the boat with a length of heavy rope or cable.

(Redirected from Water on the knee)

Swelling of the knee (colloquially known as water on the knee) occurs when excess fluid accumulates in or around the knee joint. There are many common causes for the swelling, including arthritis, injury to the ligaments or meniscus, or when fluid collects in the bursa. This condition is known as prepatellar bursitis.

Causes

Causes of the swelling can include arthritis, injury to the ligaments of the knee or an accident after which the brain’s natural reaction is to surround the knee with a protective fluid. There could also be an underlying disease or condition. The type of fluid that accumulates around the knee depends on the underlying disease, condition or type of traumatic injury that caused the excess fluid. The swelling can, in most cases, be easily cured.

Underlying diseases may include

Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Infection

Gout

Pseudogout

Kneecap Bursitis

Cysts

Tumours

Overuse

Having osteoarthritis or engaging in high-risk sports that involve rapid cut-and-run movements of the knee football or tennis, for example means an individual is more likely to develop water on the knee.

In overweight or obese individuals the body places more weight on the knee joint. This causes more wear in the joint. Over time, the body will produce excess joint fluid.

Signs and symptoms

Signs and symptoms of water on the knee depend on the cause of excess fluid build-up in the knee joint. These may include:

Pain

With osteoarthritis, pain occurs when bearing weight. The pain typically subsides with rest.

Swelling

One knee may appear larger than the other. Puffiness around the bony parts of the knee appear prominent when compared with the other knee.

Stiffness

When the knee joint contains excess fluid, it may become difficult to bend or straighten the knee in certain cases.

Bruising

If an individual has injured his or her knee, they may note bruising on the front, sides or rear of the knee. Bearing weight on the knee joint may be impossible and the pain unbearable.

Diagnosis

Diagnostic tests include:

X-ray

A doctor will request an X-ray to make sure the patient hasn’t broken or dislocated any bones or to determine if there is arthritis present.

MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging detects abnormalities of the bone or knee joint, such as a tear in the ligaments, tendons or cartilage.

Joint aspiration

Also known as arthrocentesis, this procedure includes withdrawal of fluid from inside the knee for analysis such as cell count, culture for bacteria, and examination for crystals, such as uric acid or calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals found in gout or pseudogout.

Blood tests

If the knee is swollen, red and warm to the touch when compared to the other knee, a doctor may be concerned about inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis or a crystalline arthritis, such as gout or pseudogout, or joint infection. Besides sending the joint fluid to a laboratory for analysis, he or she may request blood tests to determine a white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and perhaps the level of C-reactive protein or uric acid. If blood tests reveal Lyme’s disease antibodies forming, the condition may be attributed to it.

Treatment

Treatment of water on the knee depends on the cause of the swelling.

Osteoarthritis

If the underlying disease happens to be Osteoarthritis, removal of the fluid from the knee joint can help relieve the pressure of joint fluid build-up. After aspirating joint fluid, the doctor may inject a corticosteroid into the joint to treat inflammation.

Gout or pseudogout

With these two conditions, uric acid or CPPD crystals deposit in joints and may cause inflammation in the joint and surrounding soft tissues. An intra-articular (joint) corticosteroid injection, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, (for example Motrin and Advil) or colchicine may be recommended for treatment of an acute attack of gout or pseudogout. Allopurinol or probenecid may be started after an…(and so on)

Material Standards

CAPA quality standards apply to various types of parts made from different materials. CAPA is constantly expanding the certification program to include more parts and new materials. Currently, three specifications that set quality standards for metal (CAPA 101), plastic (CAPA 201) and lighting (CAPA 301) are in place. Each specification provides detailed testing and inspection procedures to ensure the quality of the parts covered by that specification. Where possible, all test procedures refer to the nationally recognized tests such as those of ASTM and SAE.

Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter is an official expansion pack to the computer role-playing game Icewind Dale developed by Black Isle Studios. It introduced many changes and additions to the original game, and included an all-new campaign. Some notable changes include such things as the addition of several types of classic Dungeons & Dragons enemies that were missing from the original (including barrow wights), a much higher experience point cap, new magical items to find and purchase, a special “Heart of Fury” difficulty setting for increased enemy power and higher experience point-gain, and the ability to set the resolution higher than 640×480. The game is still based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition ruleset, but like Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn, it included several changes (such as new spell progression tables) from the 3rd edition ruleset.

In order to access the new campaign, the player must enter a previously locked door in the town of Kuldahar while possessing a party of level 9 characters or above, or he could import his party after the main campaign (at which point it is exported).

Although the game contained numerous changes that most felt were for the better, it was heavily criticised for the length of its campaign, which was much shorter than the original game’s. Despite this, the game still achieved fairly positive reviews.

Trials of the Luremaster

Trials of the Luremaster is a free, downloadable expansion pack to Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter. It was released by Black Isle Studios due to criticism that, on its own, Heart of Winter was too short. It contains several new areas to explore, and a handful of new enemies to combat. It also acts as the game’s final patch, fixing a number of bugs and bringing the game’s version number up to v1.42.

The 1973 facelift involved replacing the rectangular headlights: this distanced the car a little from its NSU origins.

The Volkswagen K70 (pronounced as “ka siebzig” in German) is a sedan automobile developed by NSU and sold by Volkswagen from 1970 till February 1975. The K70 was the first VW to have a front-mounted watercooled engine.

Development as an NSU

Designed by Claus Luthe, the K70 was originally developed by NSU as a smaller brother to the more famous Ro 80, the main difference being that the K70 used a conventional piston engine instead of the Ro80’s more complicated Wankel rotary engine. The name “K70″ referred to the fact that the engine had a power output of 70hp (52kW), the “K” denoting the German word “Kolben”, meaning piston.

Postponed launch as a Volkswagen

NSU scheduled the car’s press launch for March 1969, intending to present it to the wider public at the Geneva Motor Show of that year. However, just as the car was about to be launched, well founded rumors appeared concerning the then imminent take over of cash strapped NSU by Volkswagen: even before the take over had been made public, the K70’s future was threatened by management concerns that the K70 was too close in size and price to the recently launched Audi 100. Plans for the K70 launch were at the last minute deferred, with rumors that Volkswagen personnel removed the K70 from NSU’s show stand on the eve of the show: during 1969 the Neckarsulm company found itself integrated with Auto-Union/Audi, which Volkswagen had acquired in 1964.

VW was nevertheless in desperate need for a new family sedan to replace the commercially unsuccessful Type 4, which itself had been intended as a move upmarket for the Beetle based cars. Thinking that the K70, featuring front wheel drive and modern styling, was the perfect way to transform its image, the Wolfsburg firm quickly scrapped publicity material showing the K70 badged as an NSU, and just over a year later the sedan instead went into production not at Neckarsulm, but at Volkswagen’s new Salzgitter plant. Now branded as a Volkswagen, the K70 finally started coming of the production line with little fanfare in August 1970, and was launched in export markets during the ensuing months. A launch date for the wagon / estate version, already delayed, was further deferred - indefinitely as it turned out.

Engine and transmission

The K70 as launched featured a four cylinder water cooled engine: this was a development from the four cylinder engine mounted in the rear of the NSU 1200, its displacement increased to 1605 cc. Despite reports that the car’s name reflected an output of 70horsepower (52kW), the car at launched boasted a claimed 75bhp (56kW). The engine was longitudinally mounted, well forward and placed directly above the differential, between the front wheels, and canted to the right. The clutch and gear box were directly behind the differential, and the three comprised a compact package which necessitated a relatively high bonnet / hood but which also maximised the proportion of the car’s weight carried by the front wheels, and the space available for passengers and their luggage, characteristics that the K70 shared with the NSU Ro80. Despite this arrangement, accessing or replacing the clutch was possible, using a service ramp, without any need to move the engine or gear box.

Although the look of the K70 was modern, the performance from the engine, especially on the entry level 75bhp (56kW) versions, was merely adequate. Comparison with the 411, which by 1970 had acquired an enlarged engine and fuel injection, was and is hard to avoid. Neither of VW’s family middle weight sedans topped the charts for top speed and acceleration, nor for fuel consumption, and the K70’s indifferent fuel consumption became an increasingly pressing issue because the car’s production run coincided with the 1973 oil price shock. The introduction during 1973 of an 1807 cc version with a claimed 100bhp (75kW) addressed the most acute performance concerns. The final K70s did out accelerate the final 412s, and had a higher maximum speed. But in respect of fuel efficiency, the air-cooled model - at least in…(and so on)

(Redirected from Resistance temperature detector)

Resistance thermometers, also called resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), are temperature sensors that exploit the predictable change in electrical resistance of some materials with changing temperature. As they are almost invariably made of platinum, they are often called platinum resistance thermometers (PRTs). They are slowly replacing the use of thermocouples in many industrial applications below 600.[citation needed]

General description

There are two broad categories, “film” and “wire-wound” types.

Film thermometers have a layer of platinum on a substrate; the layer may be extremely thin, perhaps one micrometer. Advantages of this type are relatively low cost and fast response. Such devices have improved in performance although the different expansion rates of the substrate and platinum give “strain gauge” effects and stability problems.

Wire-wound thermometers can have greater accuracy, especially for wide temperature ranges. The coil diameter provides a compromise between mechanical stability and allowing expansion of the wire to minimize strain and consequential drift.

Coil Elements have largely replaced wire wound elements in the industry. This design allows the wire coil to expand more freely over temperature while still provided the necessary support for the coil. This design is similar to that of a SPRT, the primary standard which ITS-90 is based on, while still providing the durability necessary for an industrial process.

The current international standard which specifies tolerance and the temperature to electrical resistance relationship for platinum resistance thermometers is IEC 751:1983. By far the most common devices used in industry have a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0 , and are called Pt-100 sensors (’Pt’ is the symbol for platinum). The sensitivity of a standard 100 ohm sensor is a nominal 0.385 ohm/. RTDs with a sensitivity of 0.375 and 0.392 ohm/ are also available.

Function

Resistance thermometers are constructed in a number of forms and offer greater stability, accuracy and repeatability in some cases than thermocouples. While thermocouples use the Seebeck effect to generate a voltage, resistance thermometers use electrical resistance and require a power source to operate. The resistance ideally varies linearly with temperature.

Resistance thermometers are usually made using platinum, because of its linear resistance-temperature relationship and its chemical inertness. The platinum detecting wire needs to be kept free of contamination to remain stable. A platinum wire or film is supported on a former in such a way that it gets minimal differential expansion or other strains from its former, yet is reasonably resistant to vibration. RTD assemblies made from iron or copper are also used in some applications.

Commercial platinum grades are produced which exhibit a change of resistance of 0.385 ohms/ (European Fundamental Interval) The sensor is usually made to have a resistance of 100? at 0 . This is defined in BS EN 60751:1996 (taken from IEC 60751:1995) . The American Fundamental Interval is 0.392 ?/, based on using a purer grade of platinum than the European standard. The American standard is from the Scientific Apparatus Manufacturers Association (SAMA), who are no longer in this standards field.

Resistance thermometers require a small current to be passed through in order to determine the resistance. This can cause resistive heating, and manufacturers’ limits should always be followed along with heat path considerations in design. Care should also be taken to avoid any strains on the resistance thermometer in its application. Lead wire resistance should be considered, and adopting three and four wire connections can eliminate connection lead resistance effects from measurements - industrial practice is almost universally to use 3-wire connection. 4-wire connection need to be used for precise application.

Advantages and limitations

Advantages of platinum resistance thermometers:

High accuracy

Low drift

Wide operating range

Suitability for precision applications

Limitations:

RTDs in industrial applications are rarely used above 660 . At temperatures above 660 it…(and so on)

Disneyland Guest Relations is a department of The Disneyland Resort created to address concerns or problems and to provide park information to visiting guests or guests planning a trip. In addition they also conduct tours of the park to the general public as well as a variety of VIP’s, including visiting celebrities and dignitaries. Also included in the department is the Resort’s Lost and Found. The department on average employ’s approximately 80 to 100 Cast Members, Team Leads (supervisors), and management. Cast Members are easily identifiable throughout the Resort by their infamous Plaid costumes and are often referred to as ‘The Plaids’. There is a Guest Relations Department in every Disney Park worldwide. Until 1978 only females were allowed to be in the department and give tours.

History

Disneyland has always had some form of Guest Service. Walt Disney created the Park with the intent to give visitors the opportunity to relive the past, and to explore fantasy and the future in a perfectly controlled environment. But he realized that some of his Guests would need special help to enjoy their visit.

Some parents would become separated from their children; some people would lose their belongings; some would feel that certain things impeded their enjoyment of the Park; some would want information about Disneyland; and some would simply need to feel that Walt Disney had a personal interest in them.

In 1955, two departments provided service to Disneyland visitors. Security operated facilities for lost children and lost belongings, as well as the gate for Guests who had complimentary admission to the Park. The other department was actually three departments grouped into one: Customer Relations (the department title), Entertainment, and Publicity.

In addition to coordinating entertainment, press releases, and other Guest business activities, it also expanded the concept of Guest Service. Upon requests from top management, they offered complimentary VIP tours of the Park, hosted by one of their three hostesses. These tours were designed to furnish foreign and domestic Guests of The Walt Disney Company with an informative and entertaining visit to the Park. The department operated City Hall, an office designed to receive comments from the Park’s visitors, and to resolve any problems the visitors might encounter during their day. The office secretaries answered telephone calls and letters requesting information about Disneyland.

As interest in the Park grew, so did the demand for Guest Service. In 1957, telephone calls to the department had increased to such an extent that the hostesses, when not on tour, were assigned to answer them. In 1958, the VIP tour service was expanded to include Guided Tours of Disneyland, available to the general public. In 1961, VIP hostess tours were augmented to include the guests of various companies desiring to provide them a special visit to the park.

By 1964, Guest demand had become so great that it became apparent that the services provided to the Guests would be more effective if they were consolidated into one department. The Guest Relations Department was formed. Since that time, as well as during its formation, the…(and so on)

Basic components of a monochromatic XPS system.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a quantitative spectroscopic technique that measures the elemental composition, empirical formula, chemical state and electronic state of the elements that exist within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a material with a beam of aluminium or magnesium X-rays while simultaneously measuring the kinetic energy (KE) and number of electrons that escape from the top 1 to 10 nm of the material being analyzed. XPS requires ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions.

XPS is a surface chemical analysis technique that can be used to analyze the surface chemistry of a material in its “as received” state, or after some treatment such as: fracturing, cutting or scraping in air or UHV to expose the bulk chemistry, ion beam etching to clean off some of the surface contamination, exposure to heat to study the changes due to heating, exposure to reactive gases or solutions, exposure to ion beam implant, exposure to ultraviolet light, for example.

XPS is also known as ESCA, an abbreviation for Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis.

XPS detects all elements with an atomic number (Z) of 3 (lithium) and above. This limitation means that it cannot detect hydrogen (Z=1) or helium (Z=2).

Detection limits for most of the elements are in the parts per thousand range. Detections limits of parts per million (ppm) are possible, but require special conditions: concentration at top surface or very long collection time (overnight).

XPS is routinely used to analyze inorganic compounds, metal alloys, semiconductors, polymers, elements, catalysts, glasses, ceramics, paints, papers, inks, woods, plant parts, make-up, teeth, bones, medical implants, bio-materials, viscous oils, glues, ion modified materials and many others.

Wide Scan Survey Spectrum for all elements.

High Resolution Spectrum for Si(2p) signal.

XPS is used to measure:

elemental composition of the surface (110 nm usually)

empirical formula of pure materials

elements that contaminate a surface

chemical or electronic state of each element in the surface

uniformity of elemental composition across the top surface (aka, line profiling or mapping)

uniformity of elemental composition as a function of ion beam etching (aka, depth profiling)

XPS can be performed using either a commercially built XPS system, a privately built XPS system or a Synchrotron-based light source combined with a custom designed electron analyzer. Commercial XPS instruments in the year 2005 used either a highly focused 20 to 200 micrometer beam of monochromatic aluminium K-alpha X-rays or a broad 10-30 mm beam of non-monochromatic (polychromatic) magnesium X-rays. A few, special design XPS instruments can analyze volatile liquids or gases, materials at low or high temperatures or materials at roughly 1 torr vacuum, but there are relatively few of these types of XPS systems.

Because the energy of a particular X-ray wavelength equals a known quantity, we can determine the electron binding energy (BE) of each of the emitted electrons by using an equation that is based on the work of Ernest Rutherford (1914):

Ebinding = Ephoton - Ekinetic - ?

where Ebinding is the energy of the electron emitted from one electron configuration within the atom, Ephoton is the energy of the X-ray photons being used, Ekinetic is the kinetic energy of the emitted electron as measured by the instrument and ? is the work function of the spectrometer (not the material).

History of XPS

In 1887, Heinrich Rudolf Hertz discovered the photoelectric effect. Twenty years later, in 1907, P.D. Innes experimented with a R?ntgen tube, Helmholtz coils, a magnetic field hemisphere (electron energy analyzer) and photographic plates to record broad bands of emitted electrons as a function of velocity, in effect recording the first XPS spectrum. Other researchers, Moseley, Rawlinson and Robinson, independently performed various experiments trying to sort out the details in the broad bands. Due to the wars, research on XPS came to a halt. After WWII, Kai…(and so on)
